Cast steel globe valves get the name from their round spherical body shape, which are designed to regulate the flow of liquid or gas by moving the disc against the flow stream to open, close, or partially obstruct a passageway. The shut off function is accomplished by moving the disc against the flow stream rather than acorss it as in the case with a gate valve.
